What is this course about?

Design of Experiments (DOE) is an approach to process design and analysis that identifies which input factors in a process (e.g. temp, pressure, time, altitude, colour, material type) have most influence on the process outputs. DOE enables the selection of optimal settings for these inputs in order to optimize process outputs. This two-day workshop introduces DOE to development chemists, engineers, managers, and technicians. The focus is on the practical application of this essential product and process development tool. To enhance participants learning, use is made of a practical DOE simulation tool. The software application used is Minitab.

The course covers factor selection, experiment design and execution, and interpretation of results, using Minitab. Case studies and interactive Q&A are used to deepen student learning. In addition to the workshops, participants are encouraged to work on small assignments after the workshops close. This builds confidence in designing and executing a DOE.

All Lean Ireland tutors are certified Lean Six Sigma black belts with several years’ experience in facilitating DOE design and implementation in a wide variety of sectors.

Lean Ireland courses are offered on an in-company basis only i.e. all candidates are from the one organisation. Course content is customised to meet the organisation’s need, at no extra cost.

What Will You Achieve?

On completion of this course, you will understand:

  • The need for good experiment design
  • How to select relevant factors (process inputs) for DOE
  • How to structure selection of tests to run, to minimise the amount of testing needed
  • How to design and run an experiment
  • How to graph and analyse DOE results
  • How to bring about a significant sustainable process improvement, based on scientific understanding of influencing process inputs.

Many of our clients have shortened new product development times significantly, as a result of attending this course.

On completion, you will receive a Lean Ireland certificate of completion.

What Topics Will Be Covered?

  • Introductions
  • Introduction to DOE
  • Measurement systems analysis (MSA) and its role in DOE
  • Introduction to Minitab
  • Pre experimental techniques
  • Designing a simple experiment
  • Factor selection
  • Centrepoints
  • Running a simple experiment – catapult exercise
  • Analysing and experiment graphically
  • ‘A Mug’s Guide to DOE statistical Analysis’
  • Quiz
  • Analysing and experiment statistically
  • ‘A Mug’s Guide to DOE statistical Analysis’ cont’d
  • Fractional Factorial Experiments – how to screen many factors with a few runs
  • Aliasing in DOE
  • Resolution III & IV experiments
  • Qualitative factors and blocking
  • Refining the model
  • Evolutionary Operations (EVOP)
  • Case study review
  • Assignment (optional)

The course will run with a minimum of 6 and  a maximum of 10 participants. Please contact us to enquire about suitable course dates for your team.

An advanced DOE course is also available which addresses issues such as e.g. multiple responses and curvature. The course content can be tailored to suit your organization e.g. the course can be facilitated using SAS JMP. Also, Lean Ireland tutors provide onsite consulting services in DOE design and execution. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Call us on +353 91 870708, or send an email for details.

How Will You Be Supported?

During this onsite workshop, you will be able to

  1. listen to and interact with the course tutor and other participants;
  2. work through Minitab exercises;
  3. practice on the DOE simulation tool;
  4. Ask questions and complete in-course quizzes, and
  5. download soft copy presentation files, with data sets and case studies, for your own future use.

On completion of the course, you will receive a Lean Ireland certificate of completion.

This course is suitable for product or process development chemists, engineers, scientists and statisticians in all industries and services including pharmaceutical, medical, automotive, general engineering, semiconductor, plastics and composites. DOE is also particularly useful for the development of new analytical tests and methods. In summary, this approach is useful to anyone charged with optimizing the performance of a process that has many input variables.

Prior to participating, participants should have a basic knowledge of statistics. A foundation webinar can be arranged for those who need a grounding in statistics before the course commences.

Welcome to our course page and I look forward to supporting you in learning new things, or how to do old things better. Over many years as a trainer and workshop facilitator, it has been a pleasure and privilege to enable teams in a variety of organizations to serve their customers better, and grow their businesses. My lean six sigma consulting engagements with clients and practical workshops have yielded benefits in the order of several €millions per year to client companies.

Prior to becoming a course facilitator, I was involved in the management of supply chain and business process improvement activities. After training as a lean six sigma black belt at Dell Computer Corporation, I left in 2001 to establish Lean Ireland. I am a science graduate, a certified ASQ lean six sigma black belt and hold a first class honours masters’ degree in supply chain management.
