What is this course about?
Join us on this learning journey through Toyota 8-step A3 problem solving. You will discover how to identify the 7 wastes, analyse process problems and problem solve in a structured way as a team member of the Lean Ireland learning community. The Toyota 8-step problem solving process is highly interactive and collaborative in nature. The objective is to enable the problem solver and team to ‘find a problem, fix a problem and prevent a problem from coming back’. The 8 steps are written up or drawn on an A3 size sheet of paper. This encourages brevity and facilitates sharing of information among all stakeholders.
The 2-day back-to-back workshops designed to be a practical and fun way to learn about root cause analysis & problem solving. All Lean Ireland tutors are certified lean six sigma black belts with several years’ experience in facilitating lean implementation in a wide variety of sectors.
A Lean Practitioner Level 1 certificate is awarded to those who have full attendance, complete the assignments and work in a team to complete and present a case study A3 project. The project material is provided by Lean Ireland. This level of competency reflects the Lean Practitioner level in ISO 18404:2015 Quantitative methods in process improvement — Six Sigma — Competencies for key personnel and their organizations in relation to Six Sigma and Lean implementation.

What Will You Achieve?
Upon completion of this certified course, you will:
- Understand how to define and root cause a process problem;
- The advantages of using a selection of problem solving tools;
- Understand how and where to use the tools;
- Be enabled to work in a team to define and analyse process problems, and
- Be able to complete a small scale project using the 8-step A3 problem solving approach.
Candidates who participate actively in the team-based A3 project, will be awarded a Lean Practitioner Level 1 certificate.

The course is suitable for all personnel (e.g. directors, managers, supervisors, administrators, laboratory analysis, quality professionals, engineers, financial analysts, doctors, nurses, porters, planners, product builders, buyers, plasterers, tool makers) who will be taking part in process improvement in the organization. Over time all personnel in the organisation should undergo training and participate in a team based continuous improvement project.

Welcome to our course page and I look forward to supporting you in learning new things, or how to do old things better. Over many years as a trainer and workshop facilitator, it has been a pleasure and privilege to enable teams in a variety of organizations to serve their customers better, and grow their businesses. My lean six sigma consulting engagements with clients and practical workshops have yielded benefits in the order of several €millions per year to client companies.
Prior to becoming a course facilitator, I was involved in the management of supply chain and business process improvement activities. After training as a lean six sigma black belt at Dell Computer Corporation, I left in 2001 to establish Lean Ireland. I am a science graduate, a certified ASQ lean six sigma black belt and hold a first class honours masters’ degree in supply chain management.
