What is this course about?
5S originated in the late 1950’s in Toyota, Japan, and has since been adopted by many western organisations, across all sectors. The basic premise of 5S is that personnel who work in any geographical area of the organisation (e.g. the development laboratory, the manufacturing cell, the sales office, the reception foyer, the warehouse etc.), have responsibility for the safety, layout, workflow and cleanliness of that area. Lean Ireland consultants are experienced in facilitating 5S is a wide variety of environments, from food processing to financial services. We provide support to the 5S champion , the employees in the area and the management team as required.
This online 5S course is facilitated over 4 interactive 4-hour webinars. This course is offered on an in-company basis only i.e. all candidates are from the one organisation. The webinars provide online theory and guidance on 5S planning and execution in the chosen area. They are live, interactive and spaced to enable participants to complete the required 5S activities in the area between webinars. The content is tailored to suit your organization, with relevant 5S advance planning and follow-up mentoring as required.
To embed 5S in the area, a two-hour follow-up review is held with the 5S team and the management team. This is an occasion to celebrate teamwork and 5S progress, and receive the required commitment from management to sustain the 5S effort in the area.
This course is offered on an in-company basis only i.e. all candidates are from the one organisation. The course content is customised to meet the organisation’s need, at no extra cost. All Lean Ireland online tutors are certified Lean Six Sigma black belts with several years’ experience in facilitating online workshops in a wide variety of sectors.

What Will You Achieve?
At the end of this workshop, you will:

- be enabled to implement, and sustain, 5S in the workplace.
In addition, you will have an understanding of a broad range of lean principles. This will enable you to sustain 5S in your area on an ongoing basis.

Next steps & close
All employees, regardless or role or rank, who work in the selected area should attend the training. In addition, personnel within the organisation who will have responsibility for 5S implementation (e.g. the 5S leaders), together with potential 5S internal trainers, are welcome to attend. A maximum of 15 people will be accommodated in the workshop.
The Lean Ireland consultant will assist the client on location selection, preparation for the event, and likely follow-up actions required after the event to ensure success.
How Will You Be Supported?
The webinars are live and interactive. You will be encouraged to ask questions and actively contribute ideas for workplace organisation.
In advance or directly after the 5S workshop, and in consultation with Lean Ireland, your organisation will select a 5S champion. This champion will be available to support the team in your area, and continue to actively drive 5S implementation in the workplace on an ongoing basis.

Bernie Rushe
Welcome to our course page and I look forward to supporting you in learning new things, or how to do old things better. Over many years as a trainer and workshop facilitator, it has been a pleasure and privilege to enable teams in a variety of organizations to serve their customers better, and grow their businesses. My lean six sigma consulting engagements with clients and practical workshops have yielded benefits in the order of several €millions per year to client companies.
Prior to becoming a course facilitator, I was involved in the management of supply chain and business process improvement activities. After training as a lean six sigma black belt at Dell Computer Corporation, I left in 2001 to establish Lean Ireland. I am a science graduate, a certified ASQ lean six sigma black belt and hold a first class honours masters’ degree in supply chain management.
