“Six Sigma is a management philosophy that attempts to improve customer satisfaction to near perfection.” – Making Six Sigma Last, George Eckes
SIX SIGMA PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Six Sigma is a brand name given to a programme that improves organisation competitiveness. It comprises a mix of:
Process improvement projects
Supplier development programmes, and
Training programmes to enhance teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Six sigma process improvement projects are managed according to a five-step Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control cycle.
Six sigma design projects are managed according to a variation of that five-step cycle: Define, Measure, Analyse, Design and Validate
Six sigma projects are led by trained personnel. Six sigma certified Black Belts lead large scale projects that return an increase of €120 to €1M in operating margin, per annum. Certified six sigma green belts lead projects that return an increase of €20K to 75K in operating margin, per annum. Certified six sigma Yellow Belts lead small scale projects that make a difference to safety and workflow in their local area.
SIX SIGMA ORGANISATION STRUCTURES
When an organisation implements six sigma, a shadow organisation is developed. This consists of six sigma trained personnel. Each has a distinct role to play in promoting, managing and sustaining the six sigma programme.
The six sigma champion is a part time six sigma programme member who provides guidance and support to six sigma project leaders and team members. S/he is likely to be a member of the senior management team.
The six sigma black belt is a full-time six sigma programme member who is expected to contribute between €250,000 and €1,000,000 to the company’s operating profit annually. Over time up to 10% of personnel in the organisation are trained as Black Belts. The certified six sigma Black Belt is a full-time role. In addition to leading projects, certified six sigma Black Belts also facilitate training programmes, and mentor Green Belts and Yellow Belts. Please see our customised training page for details of our black belt certification programme. Click on the button to understand a contract black belt’s role.
The six sigma green belt leads medium scale projects and is expected to contribute €20,000 – €50,000 to the company’s operating profit per project completed. The certified six sigma Green Belt is part-time role only, and certified candidates are expected to lead at least one project per annum. Over time, up to 20% to 30% of personnel in the organisation are trained as certified six sigma Green Belts. Please see our customised training page for details of a range our green belt certification programmes. The six sigma yellow belt is a part-time six sigma team member who is expected to participate in improvement projects and events, using a limited number of six sigma problem solving tools. Over time, ALL personnel in the organisation are trained to a minimum of Yellow Belt level. New employees typically undergo certified six sigma Yellow Belt training within 6 months of joining the organisation.
